Mumbai`s Dabbawalas…I managed to be at the Churchgate station on time to see the famous dabbawalas in action…The tiffin boxes with freshly cooked meals are collected and then distributed to the various offices.
The service already started more than a hundred years ago. Many office workers have a long commute and they prefer home cooked meals!
Here they come….
The sorting of the tiffin boxes can begin, lunch boxes are sometimes bundled into groups.
Well accustomed to the areas dabbawalas often use shortcuts to deliver the lunch boxes on time.
They barely make a mistake which is even more remarkable considering the fact that many dabbawalas are illiterate.
The almost 5000 dabbawalas deliver around 175,000 to 200,000 lunch boxes every day and earn around 10,000 Rupies per month ( 100Euros).
Fascinating story, and beautifully illustrated.
