The Weekend in Black and White

"Calling the Earth To Witness The Truth"

That is the name of this hand gesture. I am  interested in Buddhism and its tradition and meaning. While travelling in Myanmar we came upon this very serene Buddha statue.

The symbolic gestures are called mudras and have a very long tradition.

His right hand is resting on a little animal which looks like a mixture between a mouse a rat and a dragon. I don`t know the symbolism behind this gesture but for me it looks protective and tender.

  3. This looks like a very young buddha. The face has youth in some ways. Intriguing statue.

    1. The statue itself was erected in the 19th century, but I agree that the buddha looks very young. It was a very special place and I spent hours just looking around.

  8. I have a feeling of calm and serenity just looking at the face. It's too bad we don't get more education on Eastern religions here in the Western world.

  14. Buddhism has always intrigued me too... and it's fascinating how the statues of Buddha can differ so dramatically (i.e. this one is so serene compared to the happy big bellied Buddha we often see). I love the details you captured...

  16. Reading this on Earth Day ... Very appropriate. I think the Earth might be crying about some of what she is witnessing these days.
