Women weaving

We did some hiking into the mountains around Lake Inle in Myanmar. What we assumed to be a leisurely walk turned into some serious hiking under the burning midday sun. People in the countryside don't hike, it is a Western world phenomenon.  People go up and down mountains to do some errands but not for the pleasure of it. With  more and more tourism coming into the country the demand for hiking tours, bicycle or scooter trips are rising. I would not necessarily repeat it.
But on our way we were lucky to see this local women at their loom. They were weaving little bags.

This Pa-O women wear their traditional clothing, made out of wool. The nights are cold in the mountains. Trousers and jackets are layered to resemble the scales of a dragon and the headgear is fashioned to resemble a dragon's head.
Yes - we bought these adorable little bags. They are being used by men and women on a daily base.

  1. The bags look like they're made with care. It's always nice to be able to interact with real people when you're traveling.

Hier gibt's keine Kinder und keine Tiere, nur mich, die Unordnung machen kann. Und ich bin zu faul zum aufräumen ;-)

  7. My sister has a loom in a spare bedroom of hey house. She made me the most exquisite hand towel that I use instead on my table. She works a lot with wool, too, has her own spinning wheel. Of course, she does this for hobby in her spare time after her office job.. I love to see where these skills and crafts are part of life, the beautiful things people make with the most basic tools. When Beau and I took felting class, I asked the instructor about the history/origin.. we learned they felted wool in Mongolia to build their yurts. I'm rambling, but love to see these woman weavers and feel connected by the textiles and crafts.
