Our World Tuesday

Kigali / Rwanda

We stopped for a day in Kigali on our way to see the Mountain Gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park.

It was my first visit to this small country in East Africa and I was amazed by the efficiency ( no trouble with a visa) and cleanliness ( no plastic bags are allowed).

Most people associate Rwanda with the genocide in 1994 were during a period of 100 days 500.000-1.000.000 people were slaughtered.

My favourite picture, it shows Rwanda`s past and its future.
An abandoned tank and a little girl observing us.

The " Wall of Names" at the Genocide Museum. Heartbreaking to see so names of the same
families which were murdered.

The museum is a place for many people to come and mourn their deaths as it holds massgraves with ashes of 250.000 people.

The museum is a very dignified place and the people of Rwanda like the tourist to go and see it.

On a happier note: I have never seen a more cleaner entrance to a market anywhere else in the world.

The most friendliest people and delicious vegetables.

I had a conversation with her...hands and smiles and some English and French helped.
The younger generation prefers English while the older people still prefer French...apart from
Kinyarwanda and Swahili.
In 2008 the government changed the official language of education from French to English.

  5. Visitors should visit the museum CC, it was a horrifying period and should never be forgotten. How wonderful to see the recovery made. Sometimes I miss Africa so much, I grew up in Zimbabwe and Zambia, loved every minute.
