Our World Tuesday

Bagan is one of the most visited tourist sites in Myanmar. Everyone will go there and so did we…!
The whole plain is dotted with pagodas, big and small and as far as you can see. Especially spectacular at sunrise ( which we almost managed)  and sunset ( which we managed ).
An absolutely unbelievable beautiful sight and a place where one could linger for month and would still not have managed to see it all. Unfortunately restoration work paid little attention to the original structures, using modern materials as replacements and worst of all they built a 60 m high watchtower. All this and the construction of a golf course (!) led to the decision that Bagan has not been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  1. A wonderful place indeed and very unfortunate that it is not under heritage listing.

  2. That looks quite a spectacular place to visit but without the expertise of restoration work I wonder how much longer it will be around.

  3. Great looking place - and a country that seems to be coming out of a dark period.

  8. Du Glückliche! Die Fotos hätte ich auch gerne selber gemacht! Vielleicht fahren wir aber über Ostern ein paar Tage nach Österreich. Das soll ja ähnlich exotisch sein wie Myanmar... ;.-)

  9. That looks really beautiful. So much detail. It is a shame this wasn't designated a UNESCO world heritage site.

I cannot imagine how this would've looked without restoration. At the very least they are doing what they can to preserve the beauty that is this. Where I live, there are a lot of historical structures that are left to rot, without any efforts at restoration.
